MEDIA RELEASE 2/07/2024

Australian Battery Supply Chain Database Launch

The Advanced Material and Battery Council (AMBC) is very pleased to have partnered with the Queensland Government on the Australian Battery Supply Chain Database, a practical tool to grow networks to link the battery supply chain ecosystem in Australia.

With over 600 companies and research institutions identified across the supply chain, the database highlights there is a vibrant battery supply chain in Australia that is ready to grow with the right support from Government, exemplified by the Queensland Battery Industry Strategy.

The Battery Supply Chain Database is a necessary step to promote knowledge sharing between industry, research and government to accelerate commercialisation and investment.  Driven by the global transition to net zero, this new industry sector provides an opportunity to attract significant investment and employment in manufacturing capability in Australia.

The Department of Regional Development, Manufacturing and Water (DRDMW) has spearheaded the delivery of the database, at the request of AMBC members.

The supply chain covers mining, refining, manufacture of battery inputs (electrolyte, cathode and anode), cell manufacture, battery pack assembly, integration and battery management systems and recycling.  By linking local companies across the supply chain we can increase the possibility of local content in the supply chain, decrease imports and build our ecosystem.

Importantly for jobs in the transition to net zero, Regional Queensland hosts companies across the entire battery supply chain and nearly one third of identified Queensland ecosystem companies are based in regional Queensland.   This highlights that regional jobs are being generated through growth of the advanced material and battery sector.

The growth of the battery industry globally will be a key feature of the transition to net zero by 2050 and this database will play an important role in helping Australian local industry identify gaps and accelerate growth opportunities that will lead to lower costs and increased competitiveness.

The database will be maintained and updated every 6 months and run until 2027. It can be found here https://gateway.icn.org.au/battery

Quote from the AMBC CEO, Quentin Hill:  “Given the extremely fast moving nature of the sector the AMBC encourages all companies in the advanced materials and battery ecosystem to help build a comprehensive database by updating details through the website host.”

Quote from the AMBC Chair, Craig Nicol: “As a developer of battery cell technology in Queensland, I know how difficult it is to find manufacturers to supply components for our battery cells, and research facilities to help commercialise our technology. The Australian Battery Supply Chain database is a first step to building the knowledge for all those wanting to build national manufacturing capacity and support both Queensland Battery Industry Strategy and the National Battery Strategy. Our thanks to the Queensland Department of Regional Development Manufacturing and Water for delivering on our request.”

ABOUT THE ADVANCED MATERIAL AND BATTERY COUNCIL

The AMBC is the leading battery and advanced materials not for profit industry association in Australia. The AMBC’S purpose is to support the development of a world class multi-technology battery and advanced materials industry supply chain across Australia.

Established in 2022, the industry and research led AMBC;

  • provides a collective supply chain and ecosystem voice to help drive policy and knowledge sharing to grow the battery supply chain ecosystem.
  • works to accelerate commercialisation and gain government, community and investor support necessary to nurture a sustainable new industry by consolidating and extending collaboration between battery supply chain entrepreneurs, universities and government.

With growing membership giving increasing access to Government, the AMBC is focused on partnerships to create a sustainable industry ecosystem, promoting the needs of its members and becoming the pre-eminent voice for the sector.
